Coordinating Healthcare

I'm interested in organizations that are effectively collections of relatively autonomous expert units. Hospitals, law enforcement, and emergency response organizations are examples. Expert units are required to respond quickly to external stimuli, to be capable of improvisational change, and to be resilient. These organizatins often have additional societal value.  I'm interested in how expertise is coordinated in such organizations, and how coordinators can leverage experts' resourcefulness under conditions of disruption.

Coordination in Crises

I conducted a qualitative field study of a frontline hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is emerging to be a study on how the coordinated response of a hospital to COVID-19 evolved over the course of the crisis, with preliminary work presented at the 2022 and 2023 Academy of Management (AOM) annual meetings, and the 2021 and 2023 European Group on Organisational Studies (EGOS) colloquia.
